Long time readers know that I m a student of comedy Observant ong time readers will know that I m particularly a fan of Norm MacDonald Most people know him from that I m particularly a fan of Norm MacDonald Most people know him from tenure at SNL but good Lord that was a uarter of a century ago Personally I think his finest work was on his now defunct podcast Norm MacDonald Live Sadly the original episodes were all scrubbed at the command of Netflix since they got him to do a new and far amer show called Norm MacDonald Has a Show I wasn t surprised to Is Your Networking Net Working? learn that it wasn t going to be renewedIn any case I ve been aware of Norm s book published a few years ago but I only bought it recently It met my expectations which were high You may not be able to articulate the definition of the word wry but this book is just that It is the wry s wry It s impossible for me who is fairly well acuainted with the nuance of Norm s humor to know what s true and what s false As the cover declares this it not a memoir It is a curious pastiche of fact fantasy and sleight of handThe curious thing about Norm is how as a SNL vet he has met with neither post SNL failure fill in the blank here with any of dozens of former SNL players whose name you wouldn t recognize nor post SNL success Adam Sandler Chris Rock Mike Myers etc He s in this strange Norm only middleground with his former fortuneong since suandered on a gambling addictionYet the man is a genius And genius is never understood in its own time I found Based On a True Story to be engaging touching yrical and impressive Deep down Norm seems to be happy I hope he remains so Norm MacDonald has to be one of the most unappreciated comics in modern times He is so glib but hilarious History will prove him to be the Lenny Bruce of our time He has perfect comic timingand that can t be taught Unfortunately for Norm he is so far ahead of his time that no one can figure out how to place him or how to best utilize his type of comedy This has to be one of the Funniest And Most Entertaining Memoirs and most entertaining memoirs have ever readeven if it is mostly true only in his mind I have been a HUGE Norm MacDonald fan for years He is the funniest comedian in the world in my opinion This book does not disappoint at all This book is a fictional autobiography using a real timeline of events of his career but highly fictionalised obviously which goes back and forth to the fake present day story about The Plan The anguage Norm uses the stories he tells and the way he tells them the constant bullying and insulting portrayal of Adam Egat as an alcoholic ex prostitute idiot savant he thought Nelson Mandela was a jewel thief as an example The inane ramblings then the story of him planning a murder then his prison sentence over 34 chapters I will re call as one of the funniest experiences of my entire Tainted Breeze: The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Texas, 1862 life I had to stop reading because I didn t want to wake up my family I wasaughing so NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Driving wild and hilarious The Washington Post here is the incredible memoir of the egendary actor gambler raconteur and Saturday Night Live veteran When Norm Macdonald one of the greatest stand.
