Sporanox  is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat infections caused by fungus on the nails and body.

The doctor should know if you have any of these conditions:

  • heart disease, including angina or heart failure
  • kidney disease and
  • liver disease
  • lung disease
  • unusual or allergic reaction to itraconazole or other antifungal medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives
  • you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breastfeeding


Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. Take it after meals. If you have a condition called achlorhydria, are taking H2-receptor antagonists or other gastric acid suppressors, you should take this medicine with drinks such as Coca-Cola. Take doses at regular intervals. Do not take medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except for a doctor's recommendation.
Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this drug in children. Particular attention may be needed.


If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If this occurred while taking your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose


Keep out of reach of children.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees C (59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away unused medicine after the expiration date.


If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, consult an ambulance.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not use this medication with others.
Do not take this medicine with any of the following:

  • alfuzosin
  • cisapride
  • ergot alkaloids dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, methylergonovine
  • NVP
  • pimozide
  • red yeast rice
  • sirolimus
  • Some drugs may increase drowsiness or anxiety such as alprazolam, clorazepate, flurazepam, midazolam, triazolam
  • some medicines for treating cancer
  • some medicines for lowering cholesterol, as atorvastatin, cerivastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin
  • some medicines for the heart, such as conivaptan, dofetilide, Eplerenone, quinidine, ranolazine

This medicine may also interact with the following drugs:

  • antiviral drugs to combat HIV and AIDS
  • cilostazol
  • cyclosporine
  • erythromycin
  • medicines to treat stomach problems, such as cimetidine, famotidine, omeprazole, lansoprazole
  • TB medicines such as isoniazid, rifabutin, rifampin, rifapentine
  • other medicines for fungal infections
  • phenytoin, fosphenytoin
  • some medicines for diabetes

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Tell your doctor about the medicines you take. Also, please let the doctor if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs.

Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not begin to take place or if they become worse. Treatment of certain fungal infections can take weeks or months of treatment.
Avoid drugs to the stomach, such as antacids, anticholinergics and acid blockers for at least two hours after taking this medication.


Side effects that you should tell your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of face, lips, or tongue
  • breathing problems
  • coughing up phlegm
  • dark urine
  • fast, irregular heartbeat
  • flu-like symptoms
  • light-colored stools
  • Loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting
  • pain, tingling, numbness in hands or feet
  • redness, blistering, peeling or weakening of the skin, including the oral cavity
  • abdominal pain
  • sudden weight gain
  • swelling in the legs, ankles or feet
  • unusual weakness or tiredness
  • yellowing of eyes or skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if they are frequent):

  • diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • stomach upset or bloating
